Soil preparation volunteers are needed this week at the H.O.P.E. garden site. The site needs to be tilled and ridge and furrow rows established. When finished they should look much like the sketch to the left. I would like the center of the ridges to be 56 inches apart. Do not knock the crown off the ridge at this time. That should be done at planting. Not having a soil test - we guess. Place about a pint of a 16-6-12 fertilizer under ever 20 feet of row. The fertilizer should be scattered in about a 6 to 12 inch band 4 to 6 inches below the area where seed will be placed. There should be a 8 to 12 inches difference in height from the bottom of the furrow to the top of the ridge. Please leave space for the on going class to make about 2 short rows. This volunteer service will feel like work. It will be more enjoyable if several(at least 4) work together. I am told the garden is highly valued by the H.O.P.E. staff. It is also a good teaching tool for the on-going class.

I'd like to help with the HOPE Garden. I've got time this Thursday, 3/20/09 or next week most any day. Let me know if your available and lets set a date and time.
